Matilda is a collage artist working and living in the inner north of Naarm (Melbourne).

Matilda began collaging on the floor of her bedroom at university, cutting up disposable photos and experimenting placing them on old magazine pages, avoiding looming assessments and tutorial readings. Now, Matilda collects vintage Playboy magazines, National Geographics, Australian nature books and an assortment of other image-heavy second hand books and materials from op shops.

Working with scissors and a glue stick, Matilda splays her materials across the kitchen table and tinkers with cut outs, assembling them to create new images. Playing with size and perspective, Matilda explores the intersection of the natural and built worlds, and is intrigued by the changing representation of women in popular media over time.

Across many different states and houses, one thing has remained the same; Matilda’s love for spreading her magazines and clippings out on the living room floor and making a mess.
